The Bear Me Into Freedom Collaborative grew out of the landscapes and communities of Talbot County, Maryland — the place where Frederick Douglass was born and where he spent much of his enslaved youth. These fields, waterways, roads, and towns formed the earliest world Douglass knew, and they remained present in his memory throughout his life. His experiences there became the basis of the most powerful slave narrative in American literature and the source of his advocacy.

The Collaborative seeks to create thoughtful, carefully developed projects that help audiences see Douglass’s story with clarity and depth in new and more profound ways. We believe that understanding the places that shaped him — and the people who inhabit those places today — opens a unique window into his experience and into the larger story of America.

Our Mission

Exploring landscapes, lives, and ideas that shaped frederick douglass

The Bear Me Into Freedom Collaborative explores the landscapes, lives, and ideas that shaped Frederick Douglass and invites the public into a discussion of America’s promise and its unfinished work.

Through storytelling, visual art, exhibitions, and education, we create experiences that connect local memory to national history, honor the voices of those who came before us, and inspire thoughtful consideration of the paths we should be treading.

Our Vision

envisioning a future

We envision a future in which the places tied to Douglass’s early life are recognized as living classrooms — spaces where reflection, memory, and discussions are conjoined. By beginning in Talbot County and sharing outward, we hope to foster conversations and meditations that endure beyond moments of commemoration or anniversary.

Our Guiding Principles

guiding the journey

Place Matters

Talbot County shaped Douglass’s earliest understanding of the world. We honor its geography and the communities connected to it.

Historical Integrity

We strive to work with care, humility, and respect for the historical record.

Coherent Stewardship

Projects grow thoughtfully and remain faithful to their purpose.

Listening First

We listen to archives, historians, community members, and the land itself before we interpret.

Partnership with Good Will

We welcome collaboration with museums, scholars, educators, and organizations whose work aligns with honest exploration.

Invitation, Not Instruction

Rather than telling audiences what to think, we invite them to engage in thoughtful reflection.

What We Do

Strengthening conversation about frederick Douglass

The Collaborative supports four primary initiatives:

  1. Exhibitions for museums and historical societies
  2. Multi-screen video installations that become immersive experiences
  3. Photobooks and imagery
  4. Educational programs and scholarship

Together, these initiatives contribute to the strengthening conversation about Frederick Douglass and the Douglass family, Talbot County, and the ongoing struggle to achieve America’s ideals.
